This omnibus is one of the better Star Wars collections that I have had the pleasure to read. "Dark Times" takes place immediately after Order 66 has been given by Palpatine. Clone troopers everywhere around the galaxy are turning on their Jedi generals; a mass slaughter of knights, masters and younglings begins! These 15 issues deal with Jedi Dass Jennir and his attempts to survive; survive while striving to preserve and maintain his Jedi ideals.Unlike many other Star Wars Omnibus collections, this volume follows one main story narrative. It is not a bunch of similar short stories bound together by chronology. Each issue follows the one before it, and while Dass might not be the focal point of every issue, his tale is always included. It's not boring however, as many colorful, well defined characters are introduced along the way. Especially entertaining are the parts that show what newly minted Sith Anakin Skywalker, now wearing the armor and title Darth Vader, is doing.Plenty of skillfully illustrated action scenes are interspersed with some excellent character study. The story maintains a speedy pace throughout the 15 issues, making for a quick yet enjoyable read. As an added bonus, there is a "Dark Times Volume 2" available, which keeps the story going. A great addition for fans of classic Lucas era Star Wars. Star Wars EU stories don't get much better than this, either before or after the Disney buyout.The opening issues are great as they depict the immediate aftermath of Order 66. I really like how the opening issue includes the survival of a few minor Jedi who don't play into the main story (at least for this omnibus), like a Verpine Jedi standing over a pile of corpses of Clone troopers who tried to kill him, a woman who manages to crawl away into a cloud of fog during Order 66, and good old Master Zao being overlooked because he isn't part of the war effort.Dass Jener, Kai Hudorra, and Noriah Na have some great scenes in the first tow issues as confused Jedi who do a nifty job of surviving while trying to determine what the next step is. Both Jennir's decision to fight alongside the former Separatists and the others deciding to abandon the lives of Jedi are well handled and leave an impact.The following issues are all significantly darker, but still pretty good. In the first Dark Times arc, Das's efforts to rescue a friends family from slavery have plenty of sad moments, but some cool artwork and magnificent writing, along with a fun new cast of characters in the form of a colorful smuggling crew with an inclination to help do the right thing.The next arc has artwork that's not quite as good, but its still fun. The parallel journey of Dass's former companions fighting a ruthless criminal and a group of surviving Jedi being attacked on the forrest moon they've sought refuge on was good. The Younglings in the group are sufficiently enduring and Master K'Kruhk login full on survivalist mode to save them is very re-readable. The dram and emotion in that arc is also pretty good.The final two issue arc, Vector, does drag the omnibus down just a little and I'll probably skip them on a re-read and might advise you to do the same. A Jedi who's been in suspended animation for millennia provides an interesting bit of color, and I liked the parts about Vadeer and Palpatine not trusting each other. However the needless deaths of a character who really got a chance to shine in the previous arc was both heartbreaking and frustrating.I got this book for $11.99 just a few days before the price abruptly got dropped to $.099 cents for some reason. While I do wish I could have saved the ten extra dollars, I still feel that this was worth the price I paid for it, and at $.099 plus tax, it's a ridiculous steal.
