Will their past hurt determine their future ...I know the author for her historical romances, why I was curious about her foray in the western romance world. I liked I was able to find some common ground with those finally not so different worlds, honor, respect, patience.This is the story of Duncan and Harrison second shot at love. Both had been deceived and had their trust shattered, having put their hopes and love in some not deserving or unworthy being. But for Harrison the wound is still raw and bleeding. So much she doubts of herself as a woman. In her line of work she was good, yet she now wants to fulfill her father’s dreams.Not easy when it is far away from what you usually do. Yet she is not a person to be easily deterred, she got a level head to accept help when it is necessary. If only suspicious thoughts did not creep into her mind about her rescuer’s true motive. The same man who awakens desires she thought she has buried deep.Duncan despite his dreams to regain one day his family’s land, is a honor bound and honorable fellow, never he will act disloyally to get what he wants. Yet he is somewhat caught in a web of his own making when he falls for the woman who hold part of his dreams in her hands. Still, every day with patience and respect, he tries to show her he is no cad, just a man who will wait for her until she is ready to love again, if she is willing.I loved how their relationship is slowly built, from defiance to respect then trust and patience. A sweet second chance story.4.5 stars𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 kisses I usually avoid sweet romances, but the good reviews convinced me to give this one a shot. Big mistake. This totally predictable, boring story has none of the elements I enjoy. There's no suspense, mystery, conflict, action, drama, danger, or sex. I kept hoping for a bit of excitement somewhere along the way, but nope. Nothing. Zero. Zilch. (WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!)Here's the story in a nutshell. (I can't call it a plot summary, since I found no plot.) You've got to feel sorry for poor Harrison (our "heroine"). Her live-in boyfriend and business partner (Parker) takes all the funds from their firm's account and runs off with another woman. With a badly broken heart, Harrison leaves Dallas for the comfort of her father's ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Her father dies two days later, and the ranch hand hurts his back, leaving Harrison alone to run the ranch during spring calving season. Knowing practically nothing about ranching, she needs help.Enter our hero, Duncan McAllister, the handsome owner of the neighboring ranch. He can't resist a pretty woman, so he volunteers his services. He and Harrison spend days together, tagging and measuring the hoof circumference of newborn calves in numerous locations throughout her ranch. They spend their nights eating dinner and drinking wine at his house or hers. (Harrison is a wine connoisseur; there's plenty of wine in this story!) Naturally, with all the wine and togetherness, libido kicks in. Harrison and Duncan fall into lust and share lots of kisses along with the wine. Lust slowly turns into love, but can Harrison trust her feelings?Duncan appears to be a paragon of virtue: kind, dependable, handsome, honest, sympathetic, and charismatic (her words), but what if he turns out to be just like Parker? So Harrison flips back and forth between trusting Duncan and doubting his motives. Maybe all he really wants is her ranch--not her. Maybe he'll marry her to get the ranch and then have an affair with another woman. (How dumb can she be?)Duncan also has some doubts, because he was dumped by his fiancee years earlier. Can he trust Harrison not to do the same? Ugh! This foolishness drags on and on, while our would-be lovers share wine and passionate kisses but nothing else. They finally reach a Happily Ever After ending, but you won't find a sex scene. Not in this sweet romance. That's it, folks! That's the story.A couple of editing errors jumped out at me. First, a newborn male calf is not "a fine, strapping steer." He's a "bull calf" until he's castrated, usually between three and six months of age, and then he's known as a "steer." Second, we're told that Duncan's mother planted yellow roses "almost twenty years ago," before she died "when Brice was born." This would make Brice--Duncan's younger brother--less than twenty years old now, right? And he's a Texas Ranger at nineteen? I don't think so. A Texas Ranger must have at least eight years of professional law enforcement experience--along with other requirements--to apply for a position as a Texas Ranger. Perhaps Duncan's mother planted those roses almost thirty years ago?On the plus side, I found no grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors, and the f-word is only used twice, raising my rating to two stars overall.
